We Interrupt the 10th Day of Halloween to Bring You...

                                    Jim Arnosky!!!

Being the wife of a journalist does have its perks. A local elementary school was having a celebrated children's book author in for a parent night, and I got to tag along. Jim Arnosky's books have long been a staple in my science book boxes. Last night was a thrill for me on so many levels. One, to hear how he has spent his whole life observing and sketching wildlife. A self-taught amazing artist, he draws and writes only about animals that he has studied up close and personal. He tells it all in his books - what the animal eats, how and where it lives, and who its enemies are. His art is simply incredible. Two, he is a real author, and as far as I am concerned, there is no more thrilling profession on the face of the earth.

Here are a couple of the
books I have in my own
collection. The colors in Every Autumn Comes the
Bear are just beautiful.
My big thrill of the night was getting Jim Arnosky to sign one his very first of 135 books he has written over all of these years, called I Was Born in a Tree and Raised by Bees. It was one of those gems I discovered by accident while digging around for books in a thrift store a few years ago. Feeling happy!

If you are a teacher or a parent, these books may very well inspire your own little naturalist to want to get out into the big wide world of nature one day! Check some out at the library soon!

To Liz Rosenfeld at the Pleasant Street School in Laconia, NH:
those students and parents are so lucky that you pulled this event together for everyone to enjoy. Many thanks!

Tomorrow, it is back to Halloween...a double header!

Happy Reading! Till next time, Nancy
